{KXLG – Watertown, SD} The City of Watertown has announced the availability of a seasonal sump pump variance, allowing homeowners and businesses to discharge clear water into the sanitary sewer system now through March 15, 2025. This program aims to help manage sump pump discharge during freezing conditions, preventing potential sewer backups and higher future sewer rates.

The variance requires an annual fee of $125, which includes a $25 application fee. Without this variance, discharging sump pump water into the sanitary sewer is prohibited as it can lead to system overloads. For example, a single sump pump can contribute over 10,000 gallons of water daily, significantly straining the wastewater treatment facilities.

Residents can apply for the variance online at www.watertownsd.us/variance. For those without internet access, applications can be made by calling the Wastewater Division at (605) 882-6244. Once approved, the City’s Finance Office will send a bill due within 30 days.

The City will inspect sump pump systems to ensure compliance, which is required before the variance is granted. Variance holders also avoid penalties associated with unauthorized sump pump discharges, which can result in fines or jail time.

This program helps manage water discharge during critical winter months, benefiting individual properties and the broader community. The City encourages all eligible residents to apply for the variance to ensure proper water management.

For more information or to apply, visit www.watertownsd.us/variance or call (605) 882-6244.
