The Virginia Department of Transportation is aiming to improve traffic conditions in one of Greater Richmond’s most heavily driven and wreck-prone areas — Short Pump.
In an effort called the Short Pump area transportation improvements project, VDOT plans to add new lanes to Route 288 in Goochland County, install an interchange between Interstate 64 and North Gayton Road in Henrico County, alter the intersection between West Broad Street and I-64, and more.
The agency will hold a public meeting this week where residents can ask questions. The meeting will be Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Wingate by Wyndham hotel on North Gayton Road in Short Pump.
A final decision on these proposals will be made this winter. It is unclear how long construction will take. A total cost has not been determined.
VDOT has plans to change Interstates 64 and 295, Route 288 and West Broad Street in Goochland and Henrico counties.
VDOT plans to eliminate the on-ramp from eastbound Broad Street to westbound Interstate 64 (black line). Currently, cars coming onto the highway have to merge through cars exiting the highway, which results in wrecks.
VDOT plans to create an interchange at North Gayton Road and Interstate 64 in western Henrico County. The agency intends to build a “diverging diamond” in which cars briefly travel on the left side of the road.
